What a trip today!
Let's start with last night...we had hail and wind at the lake. We did ok. My cousin's house however lost shingles and had a leak on the ceiling. Rough hour it was.
After the Strom came the calm. Dave had about 12 deer in the yard in front of the camper. They got bread and cucumbers. They wanted more! Little beggars. Then they headed to Mary's where she filled them up with a second course. They hung around all eve.
We got up early and we're on the road by 7:45. We had a 5 hour drive today. The drive to the outskirts of Austin was nice then of course we hit traffic. Got to the other side...yep there was a Buccees sign. One of the must do places for me in Texas. It's a Truck stop for cars only. They have 80-100 gas pumps, 40 stalls in the bathroom, a bakery, deli, smokehouse, candy wall and beaver nuggets! Yep bought three bags.
And cheap Gas! It the size of a small Walmart inside.
We headed toward Houston. Dave was dreading the traffic on I 10. It didn't disappoint! It sucked but he did an amazing job keeping us safe and away from the idiots.
We headed to Winnie, hearing about storms behind us. So far so good. As we went East to Port Arthur we encountered some rain and wind. The closer we got to the coast the worse the wind got. We had to.pull over twice to put the trailer stairs back in. We had traveled 1600 miles no problem. That darn wind. We get in town the street lights are blowing sideways. We see this huge bridge we need to go over to get to the island we were going to be staying . Dave got us safely across and to the campground. But by now it's raining hard. I got out to help him back in. Yes I played in the warm rain of Texas. Felt like a kid for a moment then a drowned rat! We got all set up. I got warm jammies on and turned on the AC. We had wind gor another hour and a half. Did I tell you I hate wind!
It is green and beautiful here. We were able to drive around a bit about 6:30 .
A working class town, houses all on
blocks to protect them from flooding. Looks like they had damage in last week's storm. Lots of downed trees. We were able to watch an oil tanker ship come in. Another barge with the tug boats. Beautiful. There are some fun beach house out here on Paradise Island.
The town is home to huge refineries. They are lit up day and night like Christmas. Neat to look at. The campground we are in is 90% contract workers. We ran to get a few things, when we came back they were all out cooking up a storm and visiting.
There is a small lake here with signs there could be gators.
We are on the Gulf inlet. Beautiful walking path along the marshy edge. Maybe tomorrow.
We head to Avery Island tomorrow. We are going to take the ferry across.
Every day a new adventure. Thankful God kept us safe today.
Doing this on my phone so I'm limited to one picture. I'll post more tomorrow. 🧡🧡
